News From the Field--Summer 2008

Kayla Frazier, serving in South Korea

Ok, so here I am in South Korea, finding myself in awe of what a big God we serve!! When I began thinking about summer missions and where I would serve God began laying orphans on my heart, through dreams, movies, school, and just random events.

(After I was assigned to South Korea), I was left totally confused about my new found desire to love on orphans and how that would play out (there). But God knew what He was doing all along. (After we arrived, the missionary) told us all about the students (we would be working with) and what they had been through. We are working with about 30 students, who were raised in a country stricken with poverty and hardships. Many of their parents left them in order to save themselves, leaving them malnourished and starving, the children had to do whatever it took to survive. They climbed a huge mountain, and swam across a river, risking their lives to escape to where they thought there would be safety. But when they arrived there, they had no money and the boys had to work on farms, where they were abused, doing whatever they could to find food and money to live. The girls were thrown into prostitution, being sexually abused, leaving them with damage that they are still seeing doctors for.

Then the missionary proceeded to tell us that every one of the students’ parents had left them, some for selfish reason, or others had got to the school because their parents just didn't have the means to take care of them. Then it seemed like everything around me stopped and I just heard him say, "Every one of these students are orphans.” My eyes filled with tears. There it was, I had no idea but here I am with these orphans, these people NEEDING love from their heavenly Father!! He was preparing me for this but it wasn't the way I had planned it. He is so much bigger than me and even when I don't understand it, and things don't go the way I may have planned, He is always in control, nothing ever surprises Him.
